When you get new stuff for Christmas, and your house is full, you gotta make room, right? Today both the kids went back to school, and I purged the house - loaded up several garbage bags full of old clothes, crib linens, baby toys, etc. It filled the back of my Highlander with the back seats down. I didn't include a large bag of kid hangers and other debris that went right into the dumpster. Even the attendant at the Goodwill van was impressed with the size of my castoffs!
My house is not perfectly uncluttered, but it is a bit lighter without all that unused stuff. It will never be perfect, but it is better. I was feeling quite virtuous, until Anthony came home and discovered I tossed an appliance he did NOT want to get rid of. Oops.
Never mind that it was something we haven't used in years, or that we have a similar smaller product. He felt justifiably angry that I'd gotten rid of some joint property without consulting with him first. "I've never gotten rid of anything of yours!" he said, and I admit, I would be steamed if he had. I apologized, but I don't think I'll be able to get it back.
Nobody tell Anna I also got rid of Baby Tad.

Wow, so guess I am walking in your impressive shadow. I just got Al to pull the very dead tree to the curb today, and I still have two loads of decorations to put into storage. I have been itching to cull out the old toys, but then I have the added task (joy?) of figuring out which things should be saved for squirmin' wormin, otherwise known as the baby. S/he is really active now and I CAN FEEL IT! ;) Weeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I have done the same thing in the past...I did feel justified though at the time...nowadays Uncle Noel has a job remembering what he has got and what he has NOT got..hahaha so I am on a winner with this...:o) isn't it a lovely contented feeling though when you HAVE cleared all the clutter (unwanted or not)xx did you receive our card? the post has been a bit wonky lately...
I'm envious... I LOVE that feeling you get right after unloading a huge pile of stuff--it just starts taking over your life sometimes! And I think if something has gone unused for years then the person who wants to get rid of it has veto authority over the person who wants to continue keeping it. Happy New Year!
I agree with Angie on this, and we have ongoing battles in our household over these things. I'm also envious you got this done. My kids don't go back to school until next week, so it'll have to wait.
Since we haven't moved in 16 years, even though we do cull yearly, the closets and attic and garage are cluttered.
You need to come visit-bring your Highlander- and see if there's anything you can take to replace the stuff you got rid of.
I remember once when you were away at camp (about 10 yrs. old) and I cleaned out your closet. I found a shirt box full of what I thought were just old, ordinary rocks and so I pitched them. What a mistake that was, you were so upset and I don't know if you ever forgave me. Let it be said, I never did that again without checking first! We all do it with the best of intentions, don't we?
As much as I dislike clutter, it is always piling up again and again. It is a constant!

I try to give an ultimatum before I clean. Our garage was full of boxes of Flippy's stuff, and it sat there for months, and finally I told her that if she didn't open and sort the boxes by the following weekend, I was going to do it. Well, she didn't touch the boxes, so I did it as threatened. I threw some stuff out, consulted about other stuff, and reduced six boxes to two boxes over the course of an afternoon. The "warning" system seems to work well for us.
