Adorable Colin

I realize Anna gets a lot of attention on my blog, because she is so articulate and she fills every moment she is in. But please don't think I don't also adore my curly-haired cherub, Colin. In fact, after a toddler who never met a multi-syllable word she couldn't conquer, I am loving Colin's babytalk.

"I hungry," he says, rubbing his tummy, "I wanna twanwich!" He still calls his sippy cup his "MiMi," and its so cute I don't correct him, and shamefully, even encourage him. Whenever he wants comforting, he asks for "MiMi and Dween Banket."

Ah yes, the Green Blanket. I thought we were so ahead of the game when Colin appeared to be a blanket baby who had no preference between the 7 baby blankets he inherited from his sister (she who has a come-apart if Pooh Bear is missing). They were all soft knits, about the same size, and (I thought) interchangable. Until, the day the demanded the "Dween banket. DWEEN BANKET! NO, ODDER DWEEN BANKET!" The beloved green blanket has frogs on one side and raindrops on the other. Colin can tell which one it is in the dark.

He takes his little square fabric of devotion and spreads out each corner, making a little pad for himself in the kitchen. Then he sits on it and drinks his MiMi. Sometimes he folds it over his little bare legs and sometimes he feels it lovingly with the back of his hand.

He likes to watch Dora, the Backyardigans, Mary Poppins, and Bammy (Bambi). But he is in love with Cinderella. "I wah watch Cinder- rera," he croones. When she appears on screen, he beams at her. When the fairy godmother turns her rags into a beautiful ballgown, he says, "Pretty dress!" Later, he sings Cinderella's song, A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes, but Colin just hits the highlights: "A dream.... a wish... a heart may. Asleep...."

Anthony thinks his love for Cinderera and for footwear may foretell his gayness. I have heard a lot of people recently who see something feminine in their sons and think this. They almost seem to wish for it, so they can prove how tolerant they can be: "Look, my son is gay and I still love and accept him." But I don't think this necessarily portends same-sex love for Colin; I think he is in love with Cinderella, and wants to be her Prince (even though the prince is hopelessly underdeveloped in the movie).

Anyway, I am definitely in love with Colin-O.

My sister has two kids, a girl, born Nov. 2001, and a boy, born October 2003. I don't get to see them often as they live in Canada, but I get lots of anecdotes and they sound just like your two. McKenna, the elder, is like a wise-old woman in an almost-four-year-old's body -- she doesn't just speak in complete sentences, she composes entire paragraphs and I swear her conversations have an opening hypothesis and a concluding sentence. Her younger, brother, however, uses language as if he's being charged by the word. He's an energetic speed-demon, and he'd rather climb on the counter to get to the cookies, for example, than to just simply open his mouth to ask for one.

I don't have any kids, and the energy level of those who do never ceases to amaze me :)

Isn't toddler speak just sooo cute!! I can also shamefully admit to encouraging Luke's baby words. He calls grandad Colin "Gan Gan" and our three cats are Mu Mu (murphy) Ick Ick (Mickey) and Mow Mow (molly). Worrying thing is jenn, when Luke is in bed I find myself saying to Richard "let Mu Mu out sweetie" !!?? I wouldn't worry at all about Colin's love for footwear etc., Luke wanders around the house with a handbag, my slippers and a lipstick in his hand!! And he is sooo much a boy!!

Wow! That post was great! Colin really is the cutest most adorable little boy. His baby talk is adorable, and I have to admit I caught myself calling his sippy cup "Mimi". I am glad you devoted this post to Colin! It's such a cute post and describes him so well!

I loved that post,Jenn. I,also, found it SOOO amazing how he can tell the difference between the green blankets! About the footwear and Cinderella watching....I think his TOTAL obsession for sports(particulary basketball) makes up for any kind of "girlie" attributes he appears to have!!

Besides,I think he is already a lovely, little Prince!

How can you not just love our little Colin! And as for his speech patterns, while Anna takes after her Mommy in that area of development, Colin takes after his Auntie Emily. Remember she had her own words for lots of things and only we could understand her. That didn't deter or delay her intellect! I can just see him growing up to be some really articulate debater or engineer!

And don't you just love our little Bevie's comments. They are terrific!

Love, M

I love our Colin O, too. He is so dear to me. Just to add to your list of his cute words, he pronounces all L's as W's:
Wook!
Cowin (his name)
Enowee (my name)

Why do men always assume that any girly thing a little boy does means he's going to be gay? My dh freaks out when my 4 yr old wants to put on makeup with me. They all do that--it's fine! If you want to see a funny pic, though, check out
my sister's blog
It made me laugh!

Colin is so good looking. Of course, I'm delighted to say he is the spitting image of his grandad when he was a nipper.
I am also very happy that, other than his name, he bares no similarity to his namesake Colin Wilfred! ( smirk )

Man, I hope my reply doesn't get removed...I love Colin. He is so different from his sister and girl cousin Paige. I also love that he and Graham share so many similarities. They have had a similar laugh from their first respective laughs. They both enjoy the finer things like kickin back with a fully loaded sip cup (read: Mimi for Colin) and tanking up on Mommy lovins. It's so fun having these boys. Mine wears lipstick and dances on tables.

Now then uncle Eric you obviously are unaware of Dad's liking for comfort blankies, sippy cups and Disney movies!! Tee Hee XX

Oops, yes Paula, I had forgotten about those points. I also forgot how to spell 'bears' in my dotage.

'Tis ok uncle Eric, I understand!! But really he does resemble a small toddler these days, especially when he argues with Luke over the crayons, makes him even more adorable though!!! Can't believe he is 70 in a few days!! Sorry Jenn we are stealing your blog XX

No problem, Paula, I'm glad to be a witness to the family banter. Also, my tribute to Colin has sparked more comments than any other post!
